My name is Kari Fry, and I founded SUBSURFACE in 2020. My brand started the same way I think a lot of other brands start—making pieces I wanted in my closet, that I couldn't find anywhere else.

In SUBSURFACE's case, it's specialty womenswear pieces that make women feel beautiful, unique, and as though they have a power in their identity—something I feel I've dedicated my career to. 

SUBSURFACE was named after 'subsurface scattering,' a term usually used in 3D world (my background is in experiential design), that refers to the way light penetrates the surface of a translucent object—oftentimes skin! Most of what I've designed so far feels like a play on light, depth, and skin.  

Each piece is designed and developed by myself and my beloved pattern maker, locally in Los Angeles. We produce in Los Angeles, New York, and Milan—shipping worldwide. 

What I want to create is simple—I want you to be on vacation with your friends about to go out to dinner, and I want you to grab a piece of SUBSURFACE to wear, that makes you feel amazing and uniquely yourself.
